In the past couple of years the industry had seen a tremendous pick up in XML usage across multiple platforms, applications, companies and protocols. Mid-level and senior job requirements for developers in virtually all popular front-end technologies (be it ASP, Java, Visual Basic or PHP) now include understanding of XML and knowledge of XML parser components.

In this article I will explore the most widely employed uses of XML as a language, and illustrate industry-level examples of building XML data files, as well as ways of processing them within ASP and Visual Basic using MSXML parser.
