Modifying the system menu in this way has limited application, but it is sometimes useful for small applications and utilities that have an otherwise limited menu structure. It can be useful for commands you want to be easily accessible from the taskbar -- when a program is in the background or minimized, right-clicking on it's icon on the taskbar will bring up the system menu.
