Flash Buttons - Making A Simple Color Changing Button

For starters, open up Flash and click on the Rectangle Button. Next, draw a rectangle in the center of the stage, making sure to color it Red. Remember, this is a button, so don't make it too large.

Next, use the Selection Tool and double click inside the rectangle until both the inside and outside are highlighted. Then click on Insert>>Convert to Symbol and choose Graphic as the type. Name the symbol Rectangle and click the OK button.

Now delete the rectangle off the stage. I know, I know: why did we create it? Because I like to waste your time fool! Muaahhah!

Click on Window>>Library or press the F11 key. This will open your Library Pane. Inside you will see the symbol you just created, the Rectangle Graphic.

Next, click on Insert>>New Symbol. Choose Button for the Behavior, give it some silly name like MyButton and click the OK button.

As you can see, Flash automatically defaults you to the edit button view.

Buttons have four states in Flash. They are as follows:

    • Up: How the button appears when a mouse button is pressed and then released over it.

    • Over: How the button appears when the mouse is moved over it.

    • Down: How the button appears when the mouse button is pressed over it and not released.

    • Hit: This is used to determine the area the button is in.
