After a month and a half of learning to apply Flash MX 2004, I expected my own site to be completely overhauled by now. Instead, due to the lack of documentation and the struggle to find answers, I am only partially done with the first few sections. I've had to fall back to referencing some previously created Flash MX movies to make my new site available in time for this article. So, in sum, I would say that the new features of Flash MX 2004 are powerful and full of promise. Eventually, I hope to take advantage of at least half of all the new things Flash can do, but all this power comes at a price. For a designer who values his or her time, some features, like the Media Components, will greatly speed up the creation of Rich Media sites, but more mundane tasks, like adding scrolling HTML text to a web site, have become needlessly complex and time consuming. For the lack of documentation, the bugs, the lack of support, and the frustration level that comes with those drawbacks, I'd have to say that this program is definitely 2 steps forward and 2 steps back.
