EXT JS 2.1 Overview - Documentation and Examples

The EXT JS site is full of incredible examples for the different library components so it's very easy to get a feel for how the library looks and its capabilities. You can spend hours just browsing these examples; they are very well put together and very impressive.

The documentation is also very impressive and contains probably the most comprehensive and best API browser for any JavaScript library that I have seen. The documentation available as part of the standard download package is limited at best and consists primarily of links to the online documentation (although a full offline version of the API browser can be created using the AIR platform).

The API browser is laid out in a manner reminiscent of the class browser of MS Visual Studio. It lets you browse all of the different library components and the classes (and subclasses) and objects that they are made from, as well as their properties, methods, events and configurable options. Everything is laid out in a clear and concise manner and provides unparalleled information.

There are several different levels of support for the library; the EXT team offers a range of enterprise support training courses which are designed to be purchased and used at a location of your choice. These include a JavaScript, CSS and client-side development refresher/introduction package, an EXT JS fundamentals package which introduces you to the core concepts behind the library and its usage, and an advanced course which teaches you how to extend the library with custom components and introduces you to professional application architecture design and implementation.

You can choose to take up one the different support subscription packages that are available. There are four different levels of subscription: silver, gold, platinum and diamond that range in price from $299 to $4999 per year and provide benefits including read-only SVN development trunk access, email and telephone support with guaranteed response times ranging from 72 to 12 hours, remote troubleshooting, performance tuning and expert code review.

Finally, there is also a support forum for general development issues in which you can seek assistance from other developers external to the EXT team or, for support subscribers, there is also a premium forum which provides expedited support from EXT core developers.

    Summary

EXT JS is a professional development tool that is easy to use and can help you to very quickly create highly engaging and interactive web-based applications. It is packed with features, utilities and widgets that can cater to almost any conceivable requirement. All of the widgets are highly styled and polished and resemble common operating system defaults, making your applications instantly appear professionally produced.

With a range of licensing and support options, there is something here for everyone from single hobbyist developers to high-profile world-class organizations. The library has already been implemented by a wide range of leading online names such as Adobe, HSBC, IBM and Sony among many others.
