    Using the Text-align CSS Property to Center DIVs - Creating a centered three-column web page layout: the structural markup

    (Page 2 of 4 )

    In simple terms, to demonstrate how to construct a fully-centered web document layout comprised of three main columns with the “text-align” CSS property, the first thing that I’ll do will consist of creating a sample (X)HTML file, whose structural markup will look like this:

    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">

    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

    <head>

    <title>Example on centering DIVS with a liquid layout (uses the text-align property with the body element)</title>

    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />

    </head>

    <body>

    <div id="wrapper">

    <div id="header">

    <h2>This is the header of the web page</h2>

    <p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Maecenas enim. Nulla facilisi. Vestibulum accumsan augue vulputate justo. Fusce faucibus. Sed blandit, neque sed lacinia nonummy, diam quam imperdiet justo, at dictum augue nunc a neque. Sed urna lacus, tincidunt at, aliquam id, fringilla id, felis. Vivamus feugiat molestie quam. Sed id dolor. Sed ac purus id sapien.</p>

    </div>

    <div id="navbar">

    <ul>

    <li><a href="#">Home</a></li>

    <li><a href="#" id="about">About Us</a></li>

    <li><a href="#">Services</a></li>

    <li><a href="#">Products</a></li>

    <li><a href="#">Contact</a></li>

    </ul>

    </div>

    <div id="leftcol">

    <h2>This is the left column of the web page</h2>

    <p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Maecenas enim. Nulla facilisi. Vestibulum accumsan augue vulputate justo. Fusce faucibus. Sed blandit, neque sed lacinia nonummy, diam quam imperdiet justo, at dictum augue nunc a neque. Sed urna lacus, tincidunt at, aliquam id, fringilla id, felis. Vivamus feugiat molestie quam. Sed id dolor. Sed ac purus id sapien.</p>

    </div>

    <div id="maincol">

    <h2>This is main section of the web page</h2>

    <p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Maecenas enim. Nulla facilisi. Vestibulum accumsan augue vulputate justo. Fusce faucibus. Sed id dolor. Sed ac purus id sapien.</p>

    </div>

    </div>

    </body>

    </html>

    As you can see, the above (X)HTML file includes a header and a footer section, as well as three principal columns, identified as “leftcol,” “maincol” and “rightcol” respectively. So far, this is nothing unexpected, right?

    Regardless of the rather primitive structure of the previous (X)HTML file, it will come in handy for creating a centered web page design, by assigning a “text-align: center” CSS style to its pertinent body selector. In addition, it’s fair to mention that when using this technique, it’s also necessary to reset the alignments of each DIV included in the web document; this topic was discussed in detail in the previous article.

    So far, so good. Now that there’s an raw web document waiting to be styled properly, it’s time to start coding the CSS declarations that will lay out all of their respective sections.
