Starting at $1,299, the Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 product family just became available. The new release offers video content developers new features and capabilities, such as the ability to target mobile and multiple platforms.

Developers using Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 will appreciate its HTML5 and Flash authoring tools. Adobe Flash Professional CS 5.5, Flash Builder 5.5 Premium, and the Flex 4.5 framework support the development, testing, and deployment of mobile applications for Android, BlackBerry Tablet OS, and iOS. These important updates position Adobe's products well in the face of the upsurge in the development of mobile applications and content for smartphones and tablets.

Even with the support for mobile content, Adobe isn't about to abandon the desktop. “I really like the new capabilities in Dreamweaver, especially the integrated jQuery and HTML5 support,” notes Al Hilwa, an analyst with IDC. “To me this shows that Adobe will leverage the move to HTML5 to ensure that Flash developers don’t have to make an either-or choice. This is a great strategy for them because plug-in approaches will always own the high end of graphics manipulation, but HTML5 will be very widely adopted for all other Websites.”

Adobe also seems to understand that your average video editor often can't afford to pay thousands of dollars all at once for the necessary software. To make Adobe Creative Suite products to everyone who can use them, the company has instituted a subscription-based pricing plan. The plan lets customers try out products for the first time without having to spend a lot of money up front, and lets them work with the most up-to-date versions.

With the subscription-based pricing plan, developers can use Adobe Photoshop for as little as $35 per month; Adobe Design Premium Creative Suite 5.5 for $95 per month; and Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Master Collection for $129 per month. These are the prices a user would pay if they commit to using the software for an entire year. One can also sign up for a month-to-month plan without committing for an entire year; in that case, the user will pay a bit more per month.

The star of the new Creative Suite product family is Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Master Collection, which includes all of Adobe’s creative tools, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, Flash Builder, Flash Catalyst, Flash Professional, Dreamweaver, Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects. These products can also be purchased separately or as components of one or more of the five Creative Suite editions. The complete Creative Suite 5 lineup includes Creative Suite 5.5 Master Collection, Creative Suite 5.5 Design Premium, Creative Suite 5.5 Web Premium, Creative Suite 5.5 Production Premium and Creative Suite 5.5 Design Standard.
