Flash games are in abundance on the web, and the same can be said for tutorials that show you how to make them. Whether youíre versed in Flash or just starting out, here are some tutorials that can help you develop your skills as you aim to create Flash games on your own.

Build a Mini Golf Game with ActionScript 3.0

Hereís an example of a mini golf game that can help you freshen up your Flash skills and also help you kill time once you are finished.  You donít need Tiger Woods-like skill to construct or play the game, which is nice.  ActionScript 3.0 is used, with a focus on items such as Event Handlers, Functions, and the Timer Object.

Perhaps the most time consuming aspect of the tutorial is drawing.  Luckily, the author provides a file you can download to skip the drawing and jump right into the programming.  The tutorial is easy to follow and gives you some good practice that you can use to tweak the game to your liking in terms of its look and more.  The final result is a very basic golf game where you press a key to draw your club back, and release the key to swing with the hopes of getting a hole in one.

Base Defender

Base Defender may not have the best graphics youíll find in a Flash game, but it is very addicting in terms of its gameplay.  Your goal is to defend the TNT that resides below the grass.  Planes will drop bombs from up above in order to reach the TNT, and you must shoot the planes down before they can destroy their targets.  Even though the graphics are not top notch, Base Defender has plenty of components and functions.  Luckily, the tutorial is not too long, so you wonít have to wait an excessive amount to enjoy the completed game.

Balloon Shooter

Balloon Shooter is a nice little time killer thatís easy to create using Flash.  The object of the game is to shoot the balloons that fly onto the screen using your mouse pointer.  The more balloons you shoot within the one minute of allotted time, the more points you get.

This tutorial is solid because of its presentation.  There are plenty of pictures and details to help you understand the process.  As you go through each step, you will see how to create the introduction scene, game scene, flying balloons, timer, and game over scene.  The tutorial is very concise, and is a great way to jump into Flash development.

Create a Complete Typing Game in Flash with AS3

I know youíre probably wondering how a typing game could be any fun, but this one actually is!  Best of all, you can build it on your own within half an hour, even if you are a beginner.  The aim of the game is to observe the letter blocks on the screen and use those letters to type an actual word in English.  Once you type a correct word, the used letters disappear, giving way to others.  You get points for typing words correctly, but the clock is your enemy.

The Combo Detection Class is used to drive the game, as it helps to detect key combinations entered by the user.  Every element of the gameís composition is explained in detail, from the timer, to actions when a player types a correct word, to what happens when they fail.

Hangman Game

You may have played Hangman using a pencil and paper in the past.  If you enjoyed it then, you can enjoy it in digital form now thanks to this Flash tutorial.  Just in case you are unfamiliar with Hangman, the object of the game is to guess a word or phrase by using one letter at a time.  If the letter is not part of the word or phrase, a body part emerges.  Once you guess incorrectly enough times to create the manís entire body, you lose.

In this case, losing comes after guessing five letters incorrectly.  The game is simple to create through concise code and a few symbols.  The tutorial takes you from the steps of drawing the simple graphics to writing the code.  Itís short, easy to follow, and results in a fun game once you are finished.

Create a Racing Game without a 3D Engine

This tutorial comes in handy when you want to create a fun Flash game but have limited resources at your disposal.  More specifically, you will learn how to create an old school racing game without the use of a 3D engine.

No game would be complete without challenges, so youíll see how to inject hills, slopes, and curves into the gameplay.  The tutorial takes under an hour to complete and is listed as being intermediate in difficulty.  The game itself may not be anything out of this world, but the tutorial does give you a good example of how to work around limitations when you want to create the illusion of a 3D effect.

How to Make a Vertical Shooter in AS3

Vertical shooting games never seem to get old.  If you are just starting out with Flash development and want to create shooting games, hereís a good place to start.  The tutorial teaches you how to create a classic vertical shooter game in ActionScript 3, and itís broken down into six different sections that explain the process well.

Youíll begin by programming the character.  Next, youíll learn how to make the character shoot.  Creating and programming the enemies follows, and the scoring and finishing touches complete the steps.

Build an Intelligent Tic-Tac-Toe Game with AS3

Okay, so maybe Tic-Tac-Toe is not the most complex or awe-inspiring game around.  Regardless, you canít deny its fun factor.  This tutorial makes the list not for the final product it creates, but more for how it teaches you to sharpen your skills.  Made for users on the intermediate level, the tutorial covers a variety of useful topics, such as graphics customization, functions, and event listeners.  Perhaps the best part is where it shows you how to program Artificial Intelligence, or AI.  The tutorial is lengthy, but itís worth a look if you are looking to learn ActionScript 3.0.
