HTML 5: What`s New


Earlier we covered some of the new features of HTML 5, such as canvas, audio and video. In this article we'll cover many of the useful new elements that the specification brings to the table. Please remember, though, that HTML 5 is a work in progress, and not fully supported by many browsers yet.

The list of new markup elements is long. Here are some of the elements we are exploring in this article:

 

 

Name

Definition

<article>

The <article> tag defines content from an external source.

<command>

The <command> tag defines a command button. It must be defined inside a menu element.

<details>

The <details> tag is used to provide details about a document.

<summary>

The <summary>tag contains a header for the "details" element.

<header>

The <header> tag defines an introduction to the document.

<footer>

The <footer> tag defines the footer of a section or document.

<mark>

The <mark> tag defines marked text.

<meter>

The <meter> tag defines a measurement. The minimum and maximum values need to be defined.

<progress>

The <Progress> tag defines work-in-progress.

<section>

The <section> tag defines a section in a document.

<time>

The <time> tag defines a time, a date, or both.
