Microsoft Encourages HTML5 Training
As the popularity of HTML5 continues to grow, many Web developers are taking the plunge into learning more about the skyrocketing technology. This transition is taking place all over the world, and one country in particular, Thailand, is doing its best to promote HTML5 development amongst its citizens.
To encourage the advancement of HTML5 skill sets, Microsoft Thailand has launched the “Travel Thailand, Bring Back the Land of Smiles Web Development” campaign. The campaign’s main goal is to push the country’s developers towards adopting HTML5, but it also aims to promote tourism in Thailand in the wake of last years devastating floods. Many consider HTML5, the HTML standard’s latest innovation, to be the wave of the future. According to Sanguan Thannarojsakul, developer support manager for Microsoft Thailand, HTML5 is expected to become the new standard for Web development, which means many new opportunities will present themselves to HTML5 developers. Since HTML5 developers are scarce in Thailand, the time has come to increase the country’s awareness of the technology and all it has to offer in order to prevent a shortage of such necessary skills.
Thannarojsakul described the campaign: “This campaign is mainly aimed at encouraging awareness and allowing Web developers in Thailand to become familiar with HTML5, which is fast becoming the preferred language of the Web because it is most compatible across a wide range of applications and devices. We hope to bring awareness of the advanced capability of HTML5 through this competition.”
Thannarojsakul noted that 300 Web developers have signed up for the campaign since its official launch in January. “We really hope to encourage more Web developers in Thailand to have HTML5 skills. Currently, we have about 20,000 to 30,000 local software developers who are partners and less than 10 per cent of them are aware of or have the skills for HTML5,” he added.
What exactly does HTML5 offer? Flexibility is one thing, as it allows users to access sites across browsers and on a wide variety of devices, including smartphones and tablets. HTML5 adjusts websites automatically to fit different screen sizes. Furthermore, HTML5 eliminates the need for plugins, giving Web browsers all the necessities to handle both audio and video.
As it stands, there are very few websites in Thailand that are powered by HTML5. Pantip.com, a widely visited Web forum, is considered to be the country’s first HTML5 site. Apisilp Trunganont, the site’s product manager, said an upgraded version of Pantip.com will be released in July that leverages HTML5 to create a new Web architecture dubbed Pantip’s 3G. “Currently, consumers prefer to access Web anywhere, anytime, and through any devices. HTML5 will allow Web users to have a good experience of Web usage across various devices and platforms,” said Trunganont.
