How jQuery Works

When you look for tutorials on a subject, you probably look directly at the source.  Thatís the case here, as this tutorial comes straight from jQueryís official website.  It provides an introduction to the library plus some basics to give you a decent foundation to build on.

The layout of the tutorial is very organized, and it gives you the option to jump to different topics with ease.  Among the items touched on include the basics, adding and removing an HTML class, special effects, and callback and functions.  Although it is rather short in length, the tutorial offers a good starting point for beginners, plus it has links to more advanced topics when you feel that you have understood the basics.

Getting Started with jQuery

This tutorial also comes straight from the official jQuery website.  It does note that you will need a basic understanding of JavaScript and the document object model (DOM) to proceed.  Once you get past that point, you start to get into different topics, such as a basic hello world example, how to use selectors and events, how to use AJAX and effects, as well as how to use the tablesorter plugin.  Last, but not least, is a section on writing your own plugins.

jQuery Plugin Tutorial, In-Depth for Absolute Beginners

The name of this tutorial describes it perfectly.  The tutorial teaches you how to begin writing your very own jQuery plugins.  Specifically, it describes the two different jQuery plugin patterns of pattern A and pattern B.  You donít have to be familiar with JavaScript to start.  All you need is some free time on your hands and the desire to learn.

The tutorial differs from others in that it actually explains the process in an in-depth manner.  Instead of having you simply copy and paste code as in other tutorials, you are taught the step-by-step basics.  This helps you to actually absorb the information and know how the process works.  Once you write one jQuery plugin, you can write more, as the core basics are the same each time around.  If you are looking for a tutorial that actually teaches you jQuery functionality, you canít go wrong here.

jQuery Fundamentals

The jQuery Fundamentals tutorial is definitely one that you will want to bookmark.  Itís not the type of tutorial you will finish reading in a short period of time, as the content is very extensive.

The material is explained in a format that you would probably expect in a class setting.  It gives a solid overview of jQuery and offers insight on how to complete basic tasks that you can build on as you go further.  Broken up into 10 chapters, the tutorial covers topics like JavaScript and jQuery basics in the beginning, and then moves on to things like events, effects, AJAX, and plugins.  Youíll also learn some best practices to employ, how to organize your code properly, and more.  A ton of examples are inserted along the way to make the learning process much easier as well.
