In the first part of this tutorial series, we listed several WordPress plugins that could give your site’s SEO a serious boost. If you’ve ever visited WordPress’ main plugin site, you know that its catalog of available plugins is massive. To that end, here are some more impressive WordPress plugins that can give you a hand in achieving your site’s SEO goals.

HeadSpace2 SEO

In our first list of the top WordPress plugins for SEO, we had a few all-in-one solutions.  HeadSpace2 SEO is another, as it gives you all-in-one capabilities to manage your site’s meta-data.

As you’d expect, the plugin’s distinction as an all-in-one SEO solution means it comes equipped with a ton of features.  You can configure your site’s meta-data for posts, pages, categories, the home page, the 404 page, and more.  You can define tags/keywords, page titles, descriptions, custom themes, custom plugins, etc.  The flexibility of HeadSpace2 doesn’t stop there, though, as you can also tools such as Google Analytics, Statcounter, Yahoo! Site Explorer, and Microsoft Live Verification, to name a few.  You can disable visual editing, widgets, and WordPress auto-formatting, and add frame-breaker code.  HeadSpace2 also gives you the power to configure things such as messages for first-time visitors, memory limits, system timeouts, and more.  Some of the plugin’s users have even been nice enough to translate it into a host of languages for extra convenience.

Google XML Sitemaps

A sitemap allows search engine crawlers to see a site’s complete structure.  If you want your site to get indexed quickly and show up in search engine results, submitting a sitemap to the search engines should be one of your top priorities.  The Google XML Sitemaps helps with this task by generating a XML sitemap that will help the major players in the search engine game like Google, Yahoo, and Bing to index your site.

Google XML Sitemaps automatically notifies the top search engines when you create posts on new content.  It also lets you customize which posts, pages, or URLs you want to show to prevent search engine spiders from diagnosing items as duplicate content.  The plugin supports custom URLs and various types of WordPress generated pages too.

SEO Rank Reporter

If you’ve put a lot of time and effort into your site’s SEO, you are going to want to see the results of your hard work.  Traffic can give you a decent indication of how your site is doing, but rankings are obviously important as well.  If you want in-depth tracking of your Google rankings, the SEO Rank Reporter plugin offers that and more.

While Google ranking tools are nothing new, many of them can be costly.  Luckily, SEO Rank Reporter is nothing of the sort, and it gives WordPress users a simple, lightweight way to track their Google rankings directly from the WordPress admin panel.  The plugin’s functionality is rather straightforward.  You can choose certain keywords to track, and the reporter will generate Google ranking statistics on them every three days.  The tracking results are represented in graphs, and you also have the ability to view the results in tables that show each keyword’s original rank, its current rank, the rank change, and its traffic.  You can watch how your traffic changes according to ranking fluctuations and you can even see how your competitors are doing.  You’ll get a list of keywords that are driving traffic to your site and have the ability to add those keywords to the rank reporter for further analysis.  The data can be downloaded as a CSV file for convenience.  Lastly, you can customize email notifications to be sent when your ranking increases or decreases a certain number of spots.

SEO No Duplicate

SEO No Duplicate is a solid SEO plugin because it tackles the problem of duplicate content.  Many black-hat specialists tend to use duplicate content to boost their search engine rankings.  In response to this rather underhanded method, search engines try to penalize webmasters for duplicate content as a deterrent.

To keep your own site from looking like it’s being run by a spammer, you need to manage your duplicate content properly.  SEO No Duplicate helps accomplish this by allowing you to set your post page’s canonical to the permalink.  Doing so lets you specify the preferred version of a page to search engine bots to avoid any confusion and prevent your ranking from plummeting.

The internet is anything but a static landscape, and websites are constantly changing.  It’s likely that at one point or another you will have to move or shuffle pages from an old site to a newer one.  The Redirection plugin for WordPress can come in handy in such a situation, as it helps you manage your site’s 301 redirections and keep track of any dreaded 404 errors.  The plugin also helps prevent the loss of a page’s link juice when a redirection takes place.

The Redirection plugin comes in various languages, works entirely within WordPress, and does not require knowledge of Apache .htaccess files.  A couple of its older features include the ability to automatically add a 301 direction when a post’s URL is modified, or manually add 301, 302, and 307 redirections for a post.  New features begin with improved monitoring of 404 errors, which allows you to map any 404 errors to 301 redirects.  You can redirect all URLs and also take advantage of new redirection methods to redirect based on the referrer or login status, and redirect to random pages.

SEO Slugs

SEO Slugs is a simple little plugin that effectively cleans up your post slugs by removing any common words such as “a”, “the”, “what”, etc. Removing such words helps to make your post slugs friendlier to search engines.  Since WordPress automatically assigns a filename (aka post slug) to your post, you can sometimes end up with post slugs that are long and excessively wordy.

For example, if you published a post titled “How to Create a WordPress Theme,” your post slug would be /how-to-create-a-wordpress-theme.  SEO Slugs would clean up this post slug by removing the extraneous words, resulting in the following: /create-wordpress-theme.  Doing so not only cuts down the length of the entire URL, but it also makes it more appealing to search engines.  So that you have some control over the process, you can edit the slug if you wish before actually publishing the post.

WP Super Cache

Your website’s speed is a factor in SEO, and rightfully so.  It makes sense, as a quality site should load quickly and be tolerable to visit.  There are several factors that can bog your site down, so it helps to have a solid plugin like WP Super Cache at your disposal.  WP Super Cache is a caching engine that serves static HTML files to the majority of your visitors. In the end, you’ll benefit from a site that loads faster overall, and your visitors will enjoy the improved performance.  Your SEO will benefit as well, so it’s a win-win situation all around.
