Highlight Author Comments

Highlight Author Comments gives your users the ability to highlight their comments with a distinct background color.  This not only helps their comments stand out from the rest, but it can also help them find their comments quickly if they are navigating through the site.

Highlight Author Comments is easy to use and does not require you to edit your template files.  The plugin works by comparing email addresses.  If the person writing the comment has prior posting history and is logged in, their post will receive their customized color.  If they are not logged in and use a different email to post the comment, it will not be highlighted in the custom color, as the plugin will have nothing to work with.

Minimum Comment Length

Minimum Comment Length is another necessary WordPress plugin.  Why?  To put it in simple terms, it demands quality.  You want your comments section to be filled with informative comments that have some substance.  If people leave comments that are one word long or a smiley face, they will not help you in promoting discussions and more frequent traffic.

Minimum Comment Length does exactly what its name suggests.  It lets you set a minimum length for comments.  If the comment is too short, it will not be approved.  Only the administrator will be allowed to leave short comments.  Not only will this limit help improve the quality of comment content on your site, but it will also discourage those who leave pointless comments just to gain traffic for themselves.

Top Contributors

The main value of the Top Contributors plugin is how it can promote commenting and participation on your site.   As its name implies, Top Contributors focuses on the visitors who participate in discussion most frequently.  You top participants will gain notoriety by being displayed in a special widget.

The widget comes in two styles, and some added control over the styling can be had via CSS.  The first is a list style, which will list the person's name, the number of comments they have left, and their avatar for a nice personal touch.  The second style is of an avatar gallery.  It will simply show the various avatars in a simple grid pattern with some tooltips that provide additional information.

Top Contributors is lightweight and can be added to your site by simply pasting a code into your theme.  The widget will only update if a new post or comment is added, and all of the data is cached for snappier performance.  You can exclude certain people from being eligible for the widget, which gives you more control over the process.  There's also a special option that will add an icon next to your top commenter's name on all of their comments.  This plugin may not be groundbreaking, but it does help to personalize your site and gives your loyal visitors a feeling of belonging to a community.
