Styling HTML Lists with CSS: Manipulating Padding and Margins at the Same Time

In this third part of a series, I demonstrate how easy it is to manipulate simultaneously the padding and margins of an HTML list with CSS. In fact, the process is so simple that you shouldn’t have major trouble replicating it when designing your own web pages.

Styling HTML Lists with CSS: Manipulating Padding and Margins at the Same Time
(Page 1 of 2 )

Providing HTML lists with an engaging visual appearance is one of those tasks that every web designer has to face sooner or later, given the relevance that these elements have to the structure of a web page. Although at first glance the process seems simple and straightforward, it offers plenty of twists and issues that can be quite challenging, especially for those who are new to the field of professional web design.

So, if you’re starting to work with lists and want to learn how to polish their look in an approachable way, without having to deal directly with the complexities of the CSS specification, in this series of articles you’ll find a variety of examples that will help you achieve this.

Moreover, if you've already read the two previous articles of the series, you're familiar with individually assigning absolute values to the padding and margin of a list. In those tutorials I covered this topic in depth. However, there’s a lot to learn about giving a consistent and cohesive appearance to an HTML list with CSS. In line with this concept, in this third part of the series I’m going to demonstrate how to manipulate the padding and margins of a sample list, but this time simultaneously.

Now, it’s time to leave the boring theory behind us and continue this hopefully educational tutorial on how to style web page lists with CSS. Let’s get going!

Review: assigning padding and margins separately to an HTML list

In reality, individually manipulating the padding and margins of an HTML list doesn’t differ too much from doing the same thing with other web page elements. Nevertheless, if you still have some doubts regarding how to accomplish this, I suggest you look at the following examples, created in the previous chapter of the series. They will hopefully shed some light on this process.

First, here’s how to assign an absolute value to an unordered list, while leaving all of its margins untouched:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<title>Sample list with padding-left set to 20px and margins set to 0</title>
<style type="text/css">
body {
    padding: 0;
    margin: 0;
    background: #fff;
    font: 0.9em Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
    color: #000;
}
p {
    margin: 0 0 10px 0;
}
#wrapper {
    width: 960px;
    margin: 0 auto;
}
#header, #content, #footer {
    padding: 20px;
}
ul#sample_list {
    padding: 0 20px;
    margin: 0;
}
</style>
</head>
<body>
<div id="wrapper">
    <div id="header">
        <h1>Sample list with padding-left set to 20px and margins set to 0</h1>

Etiam massa libero, pharetra vel laoreet et, ultrices non leo. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Sed posuere ullamcorper lacus et sollicitudin.     <div id="content">

        <ul id="sample_list">

            <li><a href="#">List Item 7</a></li>
            <li><a href="#">List Item 8</a></li>
        </ul>
    </div>
    <div id="footer">
        <h2>Footer section</h2>
        <p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Suspendisse auctor commodo risus, et ultrices sapien vestibulum non. Maecenas scelerisque quam a nulla mattis tincidunt. Etiam massa libero, pharetra vel laoreet et, ultrices non leo. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Sed posuere ullamcorper lacus et sollicitudin. Phasellus non turpis malesuada erat ultrices tincidunt sed vitae magna. Vestibulum ante ipsum primis in faucibus orci luctus et ultrices posuere cubilia Curae; Duis purus risus, lacinia at faucibus id, luctus nec diam.     </div>

As you can see, the above list has been shifted to the left, thanks to the value assigned (via a CSS shorthand) to its “padding-left” property. The result of this process can be seen more clearly in the following screen shot:

That’s not rocket science, right? So, please focus your attention on the next example. It produces a result similar to the previous one, but by assigning the same value to the list’s “margin-left” property. Here it is:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<title>Sample list with padding set to 0 and margin-left set to 20px</title>
<style type="text/css">
body {
    padding: 0;
    margin: 0;
    background: #fff;
    font: 0.9em Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
    color: #000;
}
p {
    margin: 0 0 10px 0;
}
#wrapper {
    width: 960px;
    margin: 0 auto;
}
#header, #content, #footer {
    padding: 20px;
}
ul#sample_list {
    padding: 0;
    margin: 0 20px;
}
</style>
</head>
<body>
<div id="wrapper">
    <div id="header">
        <h1>Sample list with padding set to 0 and margin-left set to 20px</h1>
        <p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Suspendisse auctor commodo risus, et ultrices sapien vestibulum non. Maecenas scelerisque quam a nulla mattis tincidunt. Etiam massa libero, pharetra vel laoreet et, ultrices non leo. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Sed posuere ullamcorper lacus et sollicitudin. Again, the above code sample is very easy to follow, so look at the following image, which depicts the appearance of the sample list when displayed on screen:

Well, at this point you already know how to alter separately the padding and margins of an HTML list, but in most cases these properties must be manipulated at the same time. Keeping this in mind, in the coming section I’m going to create yet another basic example. It will show how to assign absolute values simultaneously to the properties in question.
